CHIEF ANALYTICS OFFICER
MARKET EXPERTISE
Telematics • ELD/HoS • Trucking Equipment • Drivers/Driving • Sleep and Sleep Disorders • 24/7 Workplace Schedule Design • Human Performance
What makes Dean a Market Expert?
Prior to FreightWaves, Dean lead Data Science teams at Omnitracs Analytics, FleetRisk Advisors and Spireon in addition to heading up Lancer’s long-haul truck insurance business. He has a strong trucking background in trucking operations, vehicle telematics, data science, business intelligence, data analytics, 24/7 workplace scheduling and human physiology.
After pioneering the deployment of the trucking industry’s first predictive models in the mid-2000’s as one of the founders of FleetRisk Advisors, he has developed a specialty in creating operational insights in freight markets using vast data sets and visualization tools to operationalize data. Dean has a Bachelor of Business in Transport and Logistics.
Dean’s trucking experience also extends to his days as an over-the-road driver in his native country Australia where in the process of covering over two million miles, he owned and operated some of the largest “road trains” in the world.
He was also General Manager of the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) where he played a key role in the development of the TruckSafe and Fatigue Management Program – both alternative compliance programs which have been cited in the FMCSA’s recent “Beyond Compliance” initiative.
Noteworthy Accomplishments
Based on his years as a sleep-deprived trucker and student of human physiology from his time studying the subject with a professor at Harvard, Dean helped develop the widely acclaimed “Risk Never Sleeps” sleep management program for commercial drivers – a unique approach to helping truckers get better quality sleep.
What Dean likes most about FreightWaves SONAR
Dean truly believes SONAR is one of the most innovate technologies to ever hit the freight market and for the first time, gives fleets and owner-operators a near-term view of the freight market around them. SONAR puts cutting-edge technology, normally reserved for the large and well-resourced fleet, in the hands of fleets of all sizes.
Interesting Facts About Dean
He played football (rugby to Americans!) professionally in Australia before moving to the United States in 2000. Dean also still holds a CDL license and owns “The Grumpy Pete," a popular Peterbilt show truck that he uses for Make-A-Wish, Touch-A-Truck, charity and fundraising events, truck shows and numerous community outreach events.

Life Outside of FreightWaves
When not traveling or working on his truck, Dean can be seen on his road bike around the suburbs of Boston where he lives with his wife and two teenage boys.
Who He Roots For
Being a New Englander, he’s naturally a Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins fan.
What is the most exciting thing going on in the freight industry?
Trucking companies are being transformed into more profitable and data-driven businesses through the introduction of innovative technology.

Michael Crosby
MARKET ANALYST
MARKET EXPERTISE
Technical Analysis • Futures Trading • LTL Pricing • Data Management & Analysis
What makes Michael a Market Expert?
Long, long ago...even before the advent of iPhones...Michael started his transportation career in 2003. Having an analytics background, he couldn’t wait to dive head-first into complex Excel formulas, create time-saving macros, learn how a database works, and, of course run his own queries. Working in the pricing department for a National LTL provider taught him a great deal about juggling linehaul capacity, the ideal amount of density on P&D routes, ebb and flow of manufacturing demands, and the costing infrastructures of a large corporation.
Even after 3 years in the pricing department when Michael ventured off into the dark, scary, and uncharted water of “Sales”....he couldn’t keep his hands off the data. Suddenly with dozens of co-workers scratching their heads trying to make sense out of an AS/400 and using a legal pad for a CRM, Michael was excited to create user-friendly dashboards, charts and heatmaps for his team’s visibility.
On a side note, Michael has been a student and participant of trading e-mini futures since 2012. Having worked in the transportation industry for 15 years and having a passion for charts/data/trading, working at FreightWaves is like combining something he knows with something he loves.
What Michael likes most about FreightWaves SONAR
Since day 1, our goal has been transparency. Just like anyone with a smartphone can see what the weather is likely to do this weekend in Tampa, AND see how much fuel costs in Atlanta on the way down...SONAR gives everyone the opportunity to see what is happening (anywhere) right now. In the past, other than being well connected, the only way to predict trends and create a budget was to look at your own data to forecast the future. While this is slightly better than blindfolded archery, even the largest carrier/shipper/broker has a small slice of the overall market. Come join us as we level the playing field!
Interesting Facts About Michael
He actually enjoys mowing the grass.
Think about it...with a full-time job and a family of 7, when is it possible for an uninterrupted hour of serenity? The purr of that 7 HP Briggs & Stratton drowns out any possibility of a ringtone or conversation within 75 feet. Plus, in a world where one’s duties are complex and never-ending, there’s a strange sense of accomplishment as each strip of grass gets a perfect haircut. Michael also suggests using a push-mower for exercise and to maximize your time.
Life Outside of FreightWaves
Sometimes not knowing when to quit can be a good thing. Michael has 5 children and a lovely wife to ensure his life is far from uneventful. Camping, ballet performances, soccer games, fixing the shower downstairs, singing a Beatles song when nobody’s listening and weekend-grilling on the Big Green Egg.
Who He Roots For
The underdog. Always the underdog.
What is the most exciting thing going on in the freight industry?
In today’s world of instant gratification and a bustling economy, we have the perfect recipe for innovative startups, traditional models reinventing themselves, and unforeseen growth across the board. From international freight to one-click home delivery of your groceries, we are at an all-time apex in the transportation world. Couple all that with the digitization of the freight industry (API, TMS, ELD, GPS, HOS, and other fancy acronyms), the timing couldn’t be better for FreightWaves and SONAR.

Transportation Technologies • Telematics • ELDs • TMS • Optimizers • Mainframe, Mid-Range, & Distributed Technology Stacks • Data Lifecycle/Management • Software and Infrastructure Architectures
What makes Jeff a Market Expert?
Jeff has spent over two decades in the transportation industry, and most recently served as Chief Information Officer for one of the largest truckload carriers in the U.S. His deep understanding of multiple technology stacks, architecting scalable enterprise class systems, and extensive background in transportation helps him understand the importance of applying technologies to support profitable business growth. Jeff has led, educated, and mentored technology implementation teams not only in technical best practices, but also in software development life cycles and project management methodologies.
Noteworthy Accomplishments
Jeff has been recognized for numerous Technology Innovation Awards related to Transportation and serves on multiple advisory boards and technology councils.
What Jeff likes most about FreightWaves SONAR
Jeff sees SONAR as an innovative platform that helps fleets, shippers, and brokers with visibility into what's happening in the freight markets. SONAR turns massive amounts of data into truly intelligent information. SONAR’s flexible architecture allows you to access the platform from any browser capable device, meaning there is no local client install needed. Anywhere, anytime scalability is critical to an industry that is always moving.
Interesting Facts About Jeff
Jeff started his career in technology by chance. He was managing a customer service department for a floor covering manufacturer that was implementing a new order management and cut allocation optimization system. Jeff was performing QA testing and taught himself how to create queries for data validation. One day, the lead developer on the new system initiative, whom Jeff had befriended over several months, called Jeff to the data processing manager’s office. When Jeff arrived, the lead developer placed a dot matrix printed green bar print out of an RPG program on the DP Manager’s desk. He asked Jeff to look at a routine and tell him what it was doing. Jeff acknowledged to the developer and manager that he had no programming experience. “I know Jeff, just tell me what you think it’s doing.” Jeff proceeded to look at the RPG code and said, “It looks like it’s manipulating a date. Then it looks like it’s looking for a leap year.” The lead developer turned to the DP Manager and said “I told you!” They immediately offered him a position as a junior developer, which by the way, paid less than he was making at the time. However, he understood the opportunity that was laid in front of him and took the offer. They invested in training him, allowed him to take classes to further his technical education, and through a lot of hard work, the rest is history!
Life Outside of FreightWaves
Jeff is an avid golfer and plays whenever he has the opportunity. He also loves to hunt and fish. He has been married to his wife Trina for 31 years and has a daughter and a son.
Who He Roots For
For college sports…Auburn Tigers! WDE! But, since the SEC does not have a wrestling program, he roots for the Penn State Nittany Lions wrestling program. Jeff is also an Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Braves fan.
What is the most exciting thing going on in the freight industry?
The technology transformations going on in the transportation industry are amazing. Brokers and logistics companies are positioning themselves as technology companies with innovative solutions to differentiate themselves from the competition. Small and medium-sized carriers are quickly catching up to the larger carriers technologically as technology gets cheaper and easier to manage. Companies are realizing the importance of innovation as investing in innovations and think tanks are becoming the new norm.

John Kingston
OIL MARKET ANALYST
MARKET EXPERTISE
Crude Oil and Product Markets • Government Energy Policy • Futures Trading • Equity Markets for Energy, Truck, and Rail Companies • Blockchain and Commodities
What makes John a Market Expert?
John has an almost 40-year career covering commodities, most of the time at S&P Global Platts. He created the Dated Brent benchmark, now the world’s most important crude oil marker. He was Director of Oil, Director of News, the editor in chief of Platts Oilgram News and the “talking head” for Platts on numerous media outlets, including CNBC, Fox Business and Canada’s BNN. He covered metals before joining Platts and then spent a year running Platts’ metals business as well.
Noteworthy Accomplishments
He was awarded the International Association of Energy Economics Award for Excellence in Written Journalism in 2015. In 2010, he won two Corporate Achievement Awards from McGraw-Hill, an extremely rare accomplishment, one for steering coverage of the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster and the other for the launch of a public affairs television show, Platts Energy Week.
What John likes most about FreightWaves SONAR
That there has never been anything like that. Moving over to the transport sector, it’s astounding that something like this never existed previously.
Interesting Facts About John
When he joined FreightWaves, freight rates rose significantly. This marked a distinct difference from when he started covering metals markets in early 1981 and they collapsed, and then started covering oil in 1985 and oil prices collapsed. And as he was leaving Platts for a corporate role with S&P Global in late 2014, oil markets collapsed again. He feels a lot better that he didn’t kill the freight markets too. (But he is also a firm believer that for an unbiased observer of a market like FreightWaves, a rising market is not “good” and a falling market is not “bad.” For every long there’s a short and companies such as FreightWaves need to be neutral in the endless standoff between the two sides.)
Life Outside of FreightWaves
Golf, cycling, active in my Lutheran Church, our first puppy that never gives us a moment’s rest. first grandchild on the way.
Who He Roots For
New York Islanders (season ticket holder), New York Jets (season ticket holder), Detroit Tigers (too far away to be a season ticket holder), New York Mets (hate it when they play the Tigers), Crystal Palace FC.
What is the most exciting thing going on in the freight industry?
That a market that has not had a large amount of transparency is on the verge of having a great deal of it. Also, that an industry where the leverage in the employee-employer relationship is starting to swing toward employees, as the baby boom ages and the surplus labor it has produced begins to disappear. It’s going to fundamentally change the industry.
