TCA Benchmarking Indices
Index: Average Length of Haul
Definition: Total monthly miles divided by total monthly loads.
Index: Brokerage Revenue (%)
Definition: Total amount of brokerage revenue represented as a percentage of total company revenue. The higher values tell you how dependent the company was on transactional (spot market) freight.
Index: Driver to Non-Driver Ratio
Definition: Total amount of drivers per non-driver. Non-drivers include all operations and administration personnel, but does not include shop personnel. The lower the value, the higher the cost of overhead outside of the primary driving function.
Index: Driver Turnover (%)
Definition: Monthly annualized driver turnover represented as a percentage. The higher the value, the harder it is to keep a driver on staff.
Index: Empty Miles (%)
Definition: (a.k.a. Deadhead %) Number of empty (non-revenue) miles driven in relation to the total number of miles driven during the month as a percentage.
Index: Insurance Expense (%)
Definition: Total insurance expense as a percentage of total revenue. This number will let carriers know how well they are managing their own insurance costs.
Index: Loaded Miles (%)
Definition: Number of revenue miles driven in relation to the total number of miles driven during the month, expressed as a percentage. The higher the value, the better the utilization.
Index: Loads per Truck per Week
Definition: Average number of loads per active truck per week.
Index: Maintenance Expense per Mile
Definition: Total maintenance expense recorded per month per total miles driven. A higher value indicates an aging or poorly managed fleet.
Index: Miles per Truck per Week
Definition: Total number of miles driven on average per active truck per week. Typically, the higher the mileage the better, depending on the percentage of non-revenue miles.
Index: Net Fuel Expense (%)
Definition: Total net fuel expense as a percent of total revenue.
Index: Net Fuel Expense per Mile
Definition: Total net fuel expense on a per mile basis.
Index: Net Revenue per Truck per Week
Definition: Average total revenue for each active truck per week.
Index: OO Driver %
Definition: Owner operators represented as a percentage of total drivers in the company (both owner op and company driver).
Index: Operating Ratio
Definition: Total operating expenses (costs incurred from daily operations) divided by total operating revenue represented as a percentage. The lower the value the more efficient (profitable) the operation.
Index: Revenue per Driver per Week
Definition: Total revenue for each active driver on a weekly basis. The higher the value, the better the chances for profitability.
Index: Truck to Driver Ratio
Definition: Number of active trucks for every active duty driver. The higher the number, the lower the utilization.
