Nardi named president of NYSA

   John Nardi was appointed president of the New York Shipping Association (NYSA) on Tuesday by its board of directors.
   Nardi, who has been executive vice president of NYSA since 2011, succeeds Joseph C. Curto.
   Nardi played a key role on the NYSA bargaining committee as it engaged in year-long negotiations with the International Longshoreman’s Association (ILA), resulting in a new, six-year contract.
   Nardi has worked for 30 years in the maritime industry at both Hapag-Lloyd and Atlantic Container Line, including ACL’s terminal operating affiliate Atlantic Coast Stevedores.
   Curto, a former Maher Terminals president, had led the NYSA since 2009. He will continue to advise the NYSA and assist with implementation of certain aspects of the new ILA contract.
   NYSA members include ocean cargo carriers, terminal operators, stevedores and marine-related businesses.
   NYSA is committed to ensuring that the work rule changes in the new ILA contract “operate in the best interest of our members,” Nardi said. “We will continue our pursuit of maximizing efficiency, achieving cost-competitiveness, growing our cargo volumes, and ensuring the safety and quality of marine cargo operations, while preparing for exciting, new global shipping developments. I look forward to building upon Joe’s strong foundation of success and his commitment to change and industry advancement.”
   NYSA has also appointed Charles Darrell as executive vice president and chief operating officer and Susan Winfree as vice president, training and workforce development/corporate diversity officer.
   With 28 years of terminal and operating experience, Darrell was most recently vice-president of operations at Port Newark Container Terminal and earlier worked for APL, where he was responsible for marine, rail and container yard activity in the Northeast.
   Winfree joined NYSA in 2010 and served as the director of workforce development and safety at NYSA’s training center in Port Elizabeth. Previously she worked for Trans Freight Lines and at Sea-Land Services. – Chris Dupin
