L.A. reports strongest August box volumes since 2006

Container volumes at the Port of Los Angeles in August increased 3.8 percent to 786,677 TEUs compared to the same month in 2014.    The Port of Los Angeles reported its container volumes in August increased 3.8 percent to 786,677 TEUs compared to the same month in 2014.
   The port authority noted that it experienced the strongest August period for container traffic since 2006, when 790,726 TEUs moved through the port’s terminals.
   “The numbers are strong indicators that our terminal operators, longshore labor and supply chain partners are adjusting to the new industry dynamics of carrier alliances, deploying larger ships and delivering higher container volumes per call,” Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka said in a statement.
   Seroka also credited the San Pedro Bay supply chain optimization working groups for contributing to the improvements in container terminal efficiency in the region.
   August imports through the Port of Los Angeles increased 6.3 percent to 407,804 TEUs, compared to August 2014, while exports dropped 14 percent to 143,936 TEUs in August 2015. The total August 2015 figures also include empties, which increased 14 percent.
