Alemán Zubieta to recieve Connie Award

   Alberto Alemán Zubieta, the former administrator of the Panama Canal, will be presented with the Container and Intermodal Institute’s “Connie Award” on Dec. 10 during a luncheon in Newark, N.J.
   The $5.25 billion canal expansion project, which began under Alemán Zubieta’s leadership, will double the waterway’s capacity and involves  construction of a new set of locks to allow the transit of longer and wider ships. The canal’s entrances at the Atlantic and Pacific channels will also be widened and deepened.
   Alemán Zubieta retired from the Panama Canal Authority in September after 16 years and has been succeeded by Jorge Luis Quijano, previously executive vice president of the engineering and programs management department in charge of the canal expansion.
   In addition to the Connie Award, students at maritime academies and other schools will be presented scholarships during the luncheon at the Newark Club. The scholarships are funded by Crowley Maritime Corp., New York Container Terminal, BSY Associates, and the Container and Intermodal Institute. Other companies may opt to sponsor named scholarships for as little as $1,000.
