GPA experiences busiest month ever in January

The Georgia Ports Authority handled 3 million tons of cargo in January, with bulk cargo at the Port of Brunswick more than doubling January 2016 figures.    The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) said its facilities handled more cargo in January than any other month in its history.
   During the month, GPA’s facilities in Savannah and Brunswick handled 3 million tons of cargo, 623,504 tons more than January 2016.
   In terms of empty and loaded containers, GPA handled 331,468 TEUs in January, a 16.2 percent year-over-year increase.
   Total loaded container volumes in January hit a new record, reaching 268,000 TEUs.
   At the Port of Brunswick, bulk cargo throughput more than doubled when compared to January 2016, reaching 235,802 tons.
   Breakbulk cargo handled at the Ocean Terminal in Savannah and at the Mayor’s Point and Colonel’s Island terminals in Brunswick grew by 17.7 percent year-over-year to 211,575 tons.
   In addition, a total of 52,778 units of cars, trucks and tractors moved across GPA’s docks in January, a 7 percent increase from January 2016.
