Maryland commits $1.97 billion to roads, bridges

Larry Hogan on Thursday announced that the state’s highways and bridges will receive $1.97 billion in building, maintenance and repair funding.
   The priority projects, which will get underway by 2018, include $1.35 billion in new construction projects and $625 million in preserved projects. The $1.35 billion in new projects includes $845 million for large projects and $500 million to fix bridges and improve roads.
   Transportation infrastructure in the state was a top campaign promise for Hogan, who announced this week that he is battling cancer. 
   The $1.97 billion covers 84 projects throughout the state, including $250 million to repave 1,959 lane miles of highway and $355 million for 13 projects to improve traffic flow. The $195 million to repair 26 bridges will be combined with $830.7 million in existing state funds to fix the current list of 70 state-owned structurally deficient bridges and maintain existing bridges, the governor’s office said.
