Port of Los Angeles experiences second busiest month ever

The Southern California port experienced a 17.4 percent year-over-year jump in box volumes in January 2017 thanks to retail stores replenishing inventories after the holidays, increased U.S. exports and cargo ships calling ahead of the Lunar New Year.    The Port of Los Angeles handled 826,640 TEUs in January 2017, an increase of 17.4 percent when compared to January 2016.
   January 2017 was the busiest January in the port’s 110-year history and second-best month overall for the port, eclipsed only by November 2016 volumes of 877,564 TEUs.
   The port said the January 2017 surge reflected retail stores replenishing inventories after the holidays, increased U.S. exports and cargo ships calling ahead of the Lunar New Year, when many Asian factories shut down.
   Imports stood at 415,423 TEUs during the month, while exports reached 162,420 TEUs, year-over-year increases of 13.1 percent and 28.7 percent, respectively. The port also moved 248,797 TEUs of empty containers in January 2017, 17.9 more than in January 2016.
