Mexico’s federal government and military took over the port city last week in an effort to end criminal activity.
Maersk noted the port “is undergoing some changes including temporary replacements of a number of port officials with the intention of guaranteeing its correct operation and to keep the port personnel safe.”
In its Weekly Highlights newsletter, Maersk said “While there have been security issues in the state of Michoacán drawing governmental concern and media attention regarding confrontations in other areas of the state, it is business as usual for the port, city and the residents of Lazaro Cardenas.”
Maersk’s sister company, APM Terminals, last year signed a 32-year concession contract with Port Authorty of Lazaro Cardenas for the design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of a new specialized container terminal.
