Port of New York/New Jersey reports 12.4% container growth in February

The bi-state port also saw a big boost in automotive traffic and handled a record number of containers with its on-dock rail system, according to data from the port authority.    The Port of New York and New Jersey reported strong increases in both containerized cargo and automobiles in February compared to the same month in 2015.
   The port’s terminals handled 500,659 TEUs during the month, 12.4 percent more than in the same period last year. Loaded import container volumes grew 7.4 percent to 258,249 TEUs, while exports of loaded containers rose 7.1 percent to 109,641 TEUs. The remaining containers handled by the bi-state port were empty, either outbound or inbound.
   In the first two months of 2016, the port has handled 978,564 TEUs of containers, including imports, exports and empties, 7.7 percent more than in the first two months of 2015.
   The port also handled 43,028 automobiles in February, a 32.5 percent increase over February 2015. Auto volumes in the first two months amounted to 77,735 units, a 15.4 percent increase over the first two months of last year.
   The port’s ExpressRail intermodal railyards handled a monthly record of 41,837 containers of all sizes in February, 16.8 percent more than in February 2015.
