CORRECTION: Cleveland port’s stance on open lake disposal

   A news report on Friday erred on the Port of Cleveland’s stance on open lake dredge disposal.
   The Port of Cleveland did not approve a measure to immediately proceed with maintenance dredging. Instead, it passed a resolution urging the Army Corps of Engineers to commence with dredging immediately. The Corps owns this responsibility, not the Port of Cleveland.
   Also, the port did not ask for permission to dispose of dredged material into Lake Erie, but instead requested the Corps to be deliberate and transparent in its decision to do this and provide for adequate time for careful consideration of all data and views, including state regulatory agency findings and local plans.
   The Port of Cleveland believes that the current dredging disposal sites not located in Lake Erie have enough capacity to handle sediment from the 2014 dredging season, said William Friedman, president and chief executive officer of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority.
