750 ton generator discharged in Charleston

Three more of the giant turbines, bound for new nuclear power plants, are expected this year.    A steam generator weighting 1.5 million pounds, or 750 million short tons, was discharged at the Columbus Terminal in Charleston.
   The generator was made by Westinghouse Electric and was offloaded from the BBC Aquamarine directly onto a Schnabel car – a 36-axle railcar designed to transport heavy and oversized equipment.
   The turbine was transported to the V.C. Summer site in Jenkinsville, near Columbia, S.C. where two Westinghouse nuclear power plants are under construction for South Carolina Electric and Gas Co.
   According to the World Nuclear Association, these are two of the five nuclear power plants under construction in the U.S.
   The South Carolina Ports Authority said it will handle three additional steam generators of the same size over the next year.
