Hapag-Lloyd opens new Tema office

The German ocean carrier said it believes it’s important for it to have its own office in Tema with the development of its West Africa services, which call at Tema.    Hapag-Lloyd has recently opened a new office in Ghana’s port city of Tema.
   “Africa is strongly developing just now,” said Lars Christiansen, senior managing director of Hapag-Lloyd’s Mideast region, in a statement. “To benefit from this growth, it’s important for us to strengthen our presence in Ghana with our own office – and to get even closer to our local customers.”
   The office is staffed with 26 employees and managed by Steen Morch Petersen, Hapag-Lloyd’s managing director for Ghana.
   The carrier also believes it’s important for it to have its own office in Tema with the development of its West Africa services, which call at Tema. The services include the West Africa Express (WAX), which calls Hamburg, Casablanca, Tangier, Dakar, Tema, Abidjan, Tangier, Antwerp and Hamburg; and the Mediterranean West Africa Express (MWX), which calls Tangier, Algeciras, Cotonou, Lagos (Apapa & Tincan), Tema and Tangier. Both services started at the end of 2017.
   “Tema is a port of call of both services, and it will become even more important once a major port-expansion project is completed in mid-2019, thereby boosting capacity from 1 million to 3 million TEUs,” the carrier said.
   Ghana’s biggest exports include cocoa, timber products and cashew nuts.
