A new marine terminal on the Delaware River received its first ship this week, according to a release issued by Gloucester County, N.J.
Doric Warrior, a 93,115-dwt bulk carrier, delivered steel slabs from Tuapse, Russia on the Black Sea to the new Paulsboro Marine Terminal, which was developed by the South Jersey Marine Terminal and operated by Holt Logistics Corp.
The steel slabs will be transported by Norfolk Southern to rolling mills operated by NMLK USA in Farrell, Penn. and Portage, Ind.
N.J. Senate President Steve Sweeney said, “This is the first modern port to be built along the Delaware River in more than 50 years.” It will be a “game changer for our region,” he added.
NMLK is initially expecting a vessel to deliver slabs for its mills on a fortnightly basis, and on a weekly basis in 2018.
The 190-acre terminal was built on a former BP tank farm.
Development was funded through $175 million in South Jersey Port Corporation bonds.
Holt Logistics has initially invested in excess of $12 million at the terminal, including cranes, rolling stock and other capital equipment.
