Zim Line targeted in Oakland demonstration

   Members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union did not cross a picket line thrown up at the Port of Oakland Sunday evening by several hundred persons protesting Israeli military action in Gaza, the Oakland Tribune reported.
   The protesters were trying to prevent the Zim Line ship Zim Piraeus from being worked. Zim is based in Israel.
   A demonstration was originally planned for early Saturday morning, but was delayed after the Zim Piraeus spent much of the day off the California coast, delaying its arrival in San Francisco Bay.
   It was unclear whether the ship would be worked Monday.
   According to Blue Water Reporting, the Zim Piraeus is a 4,992-TEU ship. It is one of 11 vessels in the company’s Zim Container Service Pacific, a pendulum service between the East Coast and East Asia that offers weekly calls. The ships operate with the following rotation: Savannah, Norfolk, New York, Halifax, Kingston, Long Beach Oakland, Vostochnyy, Quingdao, Ningbo, Shanghai, Pusan, Balboa, Kingston, Savannah.
