The cost of the facilities, with a combined operating space of 60,000 square meters, is valued at 160 million euros ($190 million).
Zoltán Bándli, managing director for DHL Express Hungary, said the facilities’ automated sorting systems will allow the company to process 6,000 packages an hour, or three times its earlier processing capability. The two facilities will employ about 600 people.
Budapest Airport has been concentrating on the expansion of its air cargo programs in recent years, with plans to add a “cargo city” next to the airport’s Terminal 2 by 2019.
“We have seen strong cargo growth during the last 18 months, and we look forward to further establishing Budapest Airport as the ideal location for air cargo distribution in Central Europe,” said René Droese, director property and cargo at Budapest Airport, in a statement.
Budapest Airport handled a record 72,161 tons of air freight between January and July 2017, an increase of 19.6 percent over the same period last year. With the completion of its cargo hub, the airport plans to handle up to 250,000 tons of air cargo annually.
