G3 Canada to build new grain terminal at Port of Hamilton

Grains and oilseeds will be loaded on vessels for transport to G3 facilities on the St. Lawrence River and then to around the world.    G3 Canada Ltd. will build a new terminal to load grains and oilseeds from Southern Ontario for export to global markets, according to the Port of Hamilton in Ontario, Canada.
“G3 is excited to announce this major investment in the Port of Hamilton as part of our vision to create a coast-to-coast Canadian grain enterprise,” Karl Gerrand, the chief executive officers of G3 (Global Grain Group), said in a statement. “Grain exports from Southern Ontario have been increasing for some time now. We look forward to expanding our relationship with farmers in the province, and will work hard to establish G3 as the partner of choice in marketing their grain.”
The 50,000-metric-ton facility will be located at Pier 26 in the Port of Hamilton, just off Queen Elizabeth Way.
The Port of Hamilton is located at the western end of Lake Ontario. Grains and oilseeds will be loaded on to vessels for transport to G3’s facilities on the St. Lawrence River. From there, G3 said they will be shipped onwards to export markets around the world.
“We recognize time is valuable for our farmer partners, which is why this facility has been designed to get trucks in and out as fast as any competing terminal in Ontario,” Gerrand added. “Combined with G3’s existing facilities in Trois-Rivières and Quebec City, and our strong marketing connections, we believe G3 will present a very competitive new option for Ontario farmers.”
Construction on the facility is already underway and is slated for completion prior to the 2017 harvest.
G3 is a company that was formed as a joint venture between Bunge Canada and SALIC Canada Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Company (SALIC).
In April, G3 announced it would acquire 50.1 percent of CWB (Canadian Wheat Board), with the minority ownership interest to be held in trust for the benefit of farmers. G3 closed on the deal in July.
G3 Canada’s assets range from inland grain and deep-sea port terminals stretching from Leader, Saskatchewan to Québec City, Québec, to Great Lake grain transport vessels and a fleet of grain hopper cars.
In June, G3 formed a joint venture with Western Stevedoring Company Limited to examine the feasibility of building an export grain terminal at Lynnterm West Gate at Port Metro Vancouver.
