Beyond visibility: Building a supply chain that can act when conditions change

Agility is one of logistics' most common promises - and one of its least defined.

Most supply chain teams have more visibility than they did a few years ago. They can see disruptions sooner, track freight in real time, and understand when a shipment is at risk.

But seeing a problem and solving it are two different things.

When capacity tightens, a border crossing closes, or rates move beyond a routing guide, teams still need to make a decision: change carriers, shift modes, reroute freight, or wait. And then they need the capacity and operational support to make that change happen.

That’s where many supply chains get stuck. Their technology may identify the problem, but execution is spread across different systems, providers, and teams. That makes it harder to respond when conditions change.

Knowing a shipment should move to a different mode doesn’t move it. Teams still have to find capacity, understand the cost and service tradeoffs, adjust routing, and coordinate the change.

For organizations that rely on disconnected technology, providers, and manual workflows, every disruption adds complexity. If rerouting freight or changing carriers or modes requires finding a new provider and creating additional handoffs, real-time visibility only gets a team so far.

The businesses that are better positioned to respond are the ones that have flexibility built into their networks before they need it.

Building a supply chain that can adapt

Real agility is built before a disruption happens.

That starts with designing a transportation network that gives teams options and makes those options easier to put into action when conditions change.

A few questions can help teams understand where they have flexibility and where their current approach may be getting in the way:

  • Can freight move between carriers without starting a new procurement process?
  • Are alternate modes already built into the network?
  • How many providers and handoffs does it take to make a change?
  • Is there a plan for common disruptions, or does the team have to start from scratch each time?

If the answers reveal gaps, there are three areas businesses can focus on: making better decisions faster, building in more transportation options, and making it easier to act when plans change.

1. Make better decisions faster

An agile network needs to use current data to identify better options without relying entirely on manual analysis and reactive decision-making.

Intermodal is a good example. When truckload capacity tightens and spot rates climb, shifting freight to rail may make sense. But that only works if the rates, providers, and routing rules are already in place. Trying to build those connections after a disruption hits can mean the opportunity has passed by the time the freight is ready to move.

The opportunity is to connect real-time data with actual transportation options. If technology identifies that freight should move differently, teams should be able to understand the tradeoffs and act quickly.

Uber Freight helps customers do this through its TMS, Optimization Engine (OE), and Adaptive Carrier Optimization (ACO). Built into the TMS planning module, OE uses a customer’s rules, rates, and shipment data to identify more cost-effective routing opportunities, including consolidation and mode conversion. ACO works alongside it, continuously comparing contracted rates with the live market to identify lanes priced above a customer’s target.

The impact can be significant. One food and beverage manufacturer used Uber Freight’s optimization tools to convert 1,300 truckload shipments to intermodal, saving $1.2 million in nine months.

2. Build in more ways to move freight

Agility also requires options.

Carrier and mode relationships need to be in place before a disruption happens so freight can move without triggering weeks of sourcing bids and contract negotiations.

Businesses can create more flexibility by giving themselves more options before the market changes. That can mean complementing annual contracts with access to additional carriers, modes, and real-time capacity. The goal isn’t to abandon contracted freight. It’s to avoid being locked into one option when conditions change.

Uber Freight’s network spans truckload, LTL, intermodal, and other modes, making it easier to bring additional carriers or transportation options into a customer’s network when they’re needed.

That becomes particularly valuable when capacity tightens. Securing capacity after a disruption hits means competing with everyone else trying to do the same thing, often at a higher cost.

Because Uber Freight operates one of North America’s largest managed transportation and multimodal networks, businesses can draw on a broader range of capacity and transportation options than they could typically access on their own. With those options already connected to the network, customers have more flexibility to adapt while managing cost and service.

3. Make it easier to act when plans change

Identifying the right option and having access to capacity are only useful if a business can actually make the change.

Complex operations like cross-border transportation put that ability to the test. A single shipment can involve multiple carriers, customs processes, and border crossings. When one part of that chain changes, teams need to coordinate quickly across the rest.

This July, for example, upstream flooding on the Rio Grande dislodged hundreds of buoys, which piled up against Laredo’s World Trade Bridge and forced the city to close the bridge until they could be cleared.

Teams monitoring shipments could see the disruption. The bigger question was what they could do about it: use another crossing, change how freight was moving, or hold shipments until the bridge reopened.

Disruptions like these are a normal part of running a global supply chain. The goal isn’t to predict every event. It’s to build a network that can respond when one happens.
