Alphaliner: Number of idle containerships dropping

   The number of containerships in long term layup is decreasing, according to information service Alphaliner.
   In its May 13-29 newsletter, the Alphaliner said there are “currently 45 containerships of over 500 TEUs that have been idle for more than six months, including 31 units idle for over 12 months.”
   It said, “At least 20 ships that have been idle for over four months, aggregating some 80,000 TEUs, are to be reactivated soon. Among these is the 3,534-TEU Northern Diplomat (built 2009), the non-operating-owner ship with the longest lay-up time, now reaching two years. The German-owned vessel is to join MOL this week on the Thailand-Japan route.”
