Classification societies look to improve large containership safety

International Association of Classification Societies has adopted new safety rules in response to break-up of the MOL Comfort in 2013.    The International Association of Classification Societies has adopted new “unified requirements” for large container ships.
   IACS said in a statement it has amalgamated three new safety measures in response to the findings of an investigation by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism into the break-up and eventual sinking of the containership MOL Comfort in 2013.
   Philippe Donche-Gay, chairman of the group, which includes 12 classification societies such as the American Bureau of Shipping, said the requirements were developed “in a very tight timeframe that will further enhance large container ship safety.”
