Great Lakes U.S-flag vessel coal moves fall 13% in September

   Shipments of coal on the Great Lakes totaled 2.7 million tons in September, a decrease of 13 percent from a year ago and the preceding month, the Lake Carriers’ Association said.
   Shipments from Lake Superior ports totaled 1.6 million tons, a decrease of 13.5 percent compared to a year ago, while coal transshipped from Superior, Wis., to Quebec City, Quebec, for loading into oceangoing colliers totaled 96,000 tons. Exports to Europe from Superior total about 1.25 million tons through September.
   Loadings in Chicago reached 262,000 tons, a decrease of 13 percent compared to a year ago, and shipments from Lake Erie ports totaled 777,000 tons, a decrease of 11.7 percent compared to a year ago.
   Year-to-date the Great Lakes coal trade stands at 17 million tons, a decrease of 3 percent compared to a year ago, the association said.
