HMM to hire up to 220 Hanjin employees

As many as 220 former employees of the now insolvent South Korean ocean carrier Hanjin Shipping will be hired following one-on-one interviews with management, Hyundai Merchant Marine said in a statement.    South Korean ocean carrier Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) will hire as many as 220 employees from its former competitor and fellow South Korean line, Hanjin Shipping, which declared bankruptcy in August 2016.
The company said it will initially “employ 131 Hanjin’s workforce including onshore, offshore, overseas staffs and ship managers. Moreover HMM will recruit 41 additional Hanjin’s employees including offshore staffs and assign them to tasks next month.”
Finally, the company said it “also has plans to rehire the maximum 40-50 additional Hanjin’s offshore staffs, depending on acquiring vessels”
“We acquire the best shipping workforce via 1:1 interview,” said C.K. Yoo, the chief executive officer of HMM. “We will fully support Hanjin’s workforce to help them quickly adapt and adjust into HMM’s corporate culture and come into their own.”
Meanwhile, Yoo said in an interview with Maeil Business News HMM is “gearing up to take over shipping terminals in Indonesia and Vietnam in a bid to expand its presence in the global market.” He also told the newspaper that HMM’s new alliance with intra-Asia carriers Heung-A and Sinokor Merchant Marine will construct new ports where their cargo handling is concentrated.
