Police in Texas said they have solved the mystery of a severed human leg found on an interstate highway in March.
Officials with the Boerne Police Department said they believe the leg belongs to Jeremy McGee, 46, of Kerrville, Texas. McGee, a commercial truck driver, was killed after he was struck by an SUV while standing outside his truck on Interstate 10.
Officials said they made the discovery on Interstate 10 in Cibolo, Texas, on March 22 — the same day as a fatal crash involving a commercial truck near the city of Boerne about 50 miles away.
“The leg that was found on Interstate 10 West [in Cibolo] is related to the fatality accident that occurred on Interstate 10 in Boerne,” Chris Shadrock, a spokesman for the city of Boerne, told the Seguin Gazette. “Investigators currently believe that when the victim in that accident was initially hit by a black SUV, a part of his body was actually picked up by another 18-wheeler directly behind that [SUV] driver.”
McGee had pulled his tractor-trailer onto the right-hand shoulder of I-10, near Boerne. “The truck’s headlights were on, a right-side blinker was flashing, but the emergency flashers were not activated,” according to a release.
While standing on the side of I-10, McGee was struck by a passing SUV. The driver of the SUV pulled over and remained at the scene, police said.
McGee was born in Arkansas but graduated from high school in central Texas.
According to his online obituary, he graduated from Ingram High School, “where his love for basketball was formed. He continued playing basketball at McMurray University and continued playing basketball for a travel club league. Later, he shared his love of the game while coaching his daughter’s team. He made sure the entire team was able to participate and enjoy the game as much as he did.”
Authorities said they have not determined why McGee had stopped his truck and was standing along the road.
Texas was the state with the greatest number of people killed outside a disabled vehicle from 2015 through 2019, totaling 263 people, according to a report from AAA based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. California was second with 248.
Police are still investigating but said they do not plan to file charges against the SUV driver.
