U.S. trailer orders surged in September to their highest level in nearly four years, while FTR Transportation Intelligence and ACT Research reported conflicting trends in North American Class 8 truck orders.
The mixed signals come as fleets navigate regulatory uncertainty, rising equipment costs and shifting investment priorities ahead of the 2027 model year.
U.S. trailer net orders reached 43,059 units in September, up 78% from August and 385% year over year, FTR reported. The total was the highest since December 2022 and marked an unusually strong start to the 2027 trailer ordering season.
Meanwhile, North American Class 8 truck orders totaled 19,172 units in September, down 7% from a year earlier and 15% month over month on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to ACT Research.
The contrasting results highlight a divergence in commercial vehicle demand as carriers prioritize trailer replacements while delaying some heavy-duty truck purchases amid uncertainty over federal emissions regulations and future equipment costs.
Trailer orders jump as fleets prepare for 2027
FTR said September’s trailer orders reflected substantial pent-up replacement demand following an extended period of weak equipment purchasing.
The research firm said earlier openings of 2027 trailer order books and expectations of additional tariff-related price increases may be prompting carriers to accelerate equipment purchases.
September 2026 equipment orders at a glance
| Equipment category | September orders | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. trailers — FTR | 43,059 | +385% |
| U.S. trailers — ACT | 42,700 | +311% |
FTR also suggested that the conclusion of the Class 8 truck pre-buy cycle and uncertainty surrounding the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2027 nitrogen oxide emissions requirements could be shifting some near-term fleet spending from trucks toward trailers.
Dan Moyer, senior analyst for commercial vehicles at FTR, said industry feedback indicates fleets are becoming more active in equipment planning.
“Rising quote activity and more requests for proposals indicate that fleets are becoming increasingly active in equipment planning,” Moyer said in a statement.
Class 8 truck orders show mixed signals
While U.S. trailer orders surged in September, research firms reported conflicting trends in North American Class 8 truck demand.
FTR Transportation Intelligence reported preliminary September Class 8 net orders of 21,300 units, up 18% from August and 3% year over year. However, ACT Research reported final September orders of 19,172 units, down 7% from a year earlier and 15% month over month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
Despite the differing estimates, both firms pointed to uncertainty surrounding the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2027 emissions regulations and truck pricing as factors influencing fleet purchasing decisions.
How the September figures compare
| Metric | FTR | ACT Research |
|---|---|---|
| September Class 8 orders | 21,300 | 19,172 |
| Year-over-year change | +3% | -7% |
| Month-over-month change | +18% | -15%* |
| Data status | Preliminary | Final |
Medium-duty truck orders remain resilient
Demand for medium-duty commercial vehicles remained stronger than the Class 8 segment in September.
ACT reported North American Classes 5-7 truck orders of 20,297 units, up 27% year over year.
The research firm said medium-duty demand may be benefiting from dealer inventory stocking ahead of anticipated regulatory changes and higher equipment prices in 2027.
The growth in medium-duty orders contrasts with the weakness in Class 8 purchases, underscoring differences in purchasing patterns across commercial vehicle segments.
Why it matters: Fleet replacement demand is strengthening, but conflicting truck order estimates and unresolved emissions regulations complicate the outlook for commercial vehicle manufacturers.
