Maher partners with Kalmar for Prince Rupert terminal Marine terminal operator Maher Terminals of Canada Corp. said Wednesday it has chosen cargo handling equipment maker Kalmar to outfit operations at the new Fairview Terminal in Prince Rupert, British Columbia.
   Over the past year, New Jersey-based Maher has ordered 17 reachstackers and 34 terminal tractors from the Helsinki, Finland-based Kalmar. Reachstackers are large mobile container lifting chassis, similar in operation to forklifts, but with the added feature of being able to telescope up and out over stacks of containers in the yard. Maher said all the equipment will be in place and operational by the Fairview Terminal's opening in October.

   A longtime customer of Kalmar, Maher is the Finnish firm's largest operator of Kalmar global straddle carriers — with 183 of the container-lifting mobile cranes at the Maher operations in the Port of New York and New Jersey. Maher also operates three Kalmar reachstackers at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's Millennium Marine Rail facility.
   Kalmar, part of Cargotec Corp., is one of the world's largest providers of container handling equipment, with 25 percent of all worldwide container moves handled by the firm's equipment.
   The Fairview Terminal reachstackers purchased by Maher will be used to support container yard and intermodal on-dock double stack rail operations at the Canadian facility. The units feature increased load capacities of 45 tons in the first row, 35 tons in the second row and 18 tons in the third row.
   The first phase of the Prince Rupert container terminal project — a joint venture between CN, Maher Terminals of Canada Corp and the Prince Rupert Port Authority — will provide an annual container handling capacity of 500,000 TEUs, increasing to 1 million TEUs following the completion of the second phase.
