UPS Freight to cut 160 positions at Richmond HQ

The parcel giant’s trucking unit plans to lay off 80 workers during third quarter 2016, and another 80 over the next year as part of an effort to cut costs and streamline operations, according to a statement from the company.    UPS Freight plans to slash 160 positions at its Richmond, Va. headquarters within the next year, according to a statement from the company.
The parcel giant’s trucking unit will lay off 80 workers during third quarter 2016, and another 80 over the next year as part of an effort to cut costs and streamline operations, UPS said. UPS Freight’s headquarters will remain in Richmond.
UPS said it is “streamlining support positions” in order “to address needed cost reductions and operating improvements.
“About 160 support positions will be impacted as a result of realignment of duties into other UPS locations,” the company said. “Eighty roles will be transitioned from the business this quarter, with another 80 over the next twelve months.”
UPS director of corporate media relations Glenn Zaccara said in an e-mail to the Richmond Times-Dispatch the division’s HQ also currently has 45 job openings and employees affected by the layoffs “are being offered an opportunity to apply for those roles.”
Asked if affected employees will be given severance packages, Zaccara said UPS is “working with employees to provide them appropriate transition services.”
