APL announces layoffs in Oakland

APL announces layoffs in Oakland Singapore-based ocean carrier APL announced layoffs Friday at its Oakland headquarters, including some outsourcing of jobs to Singapore, according to an AP report.
   APL spokesman Mike Zampa said that the cuts would be made in the area of technology planning, systems development and project management.
   Between February and June, some of the local positions will be gradually eliminated while some will be outsourced to the group’s Singapore base, Zampa said. 'Nobody can say for sure how many (cuts) we'll wind up with.'
   An independent source said the number of cuts was approaching 100 people, or nearly 20 percent of the shipping line's 550 Oakland employees.
   APL's parent, Neptune Orient Lines, is majority-owned by Temasek Holdings, the investment arm of the Singapore government.
