Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller steps down as chairman of Danish shipping group
Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller will step down as chairman of the A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S group on Dec. 15 after 38 years at the helm of one of Europe’s most successful international shipping groups. The announcement comes six months after the two stock market-listed arms of the A.P. Moller group merged into A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S, a development that was expected to coincide with the retirement of Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller.
Moller, 90, has been chairman of the A.P. Moller group since the death of his father and company founder, Arnold Peter Moller, in 1965. In 1993, Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller officially let go of the daily management of the company, though he is understood to have continued his involvement.
His successor as chairman of the board of directors of A.P. Moller-Maersk is Michael Pram Rasmussen, the managing director of the Danish insurance group TopDanmark. Rasmussen was previously vice chairman of A.P. Moller-Maersk.
Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller will remain chairman of Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd. and of Maersk Oil and Gas AS. He will also continue to be a partner of the “Firm of A.P. Moller.” Under Danish law, a company can be a director of another company, as is the case with the “Firm of A.P. Moller” and A.P. Moller-Maersk.
Jess Soderberg will continue as chief executive of A.P. Moller-Maersk.
A.P. Moller-Maersk is the parent company of Maersk Sealand, Safmarine Container Lines, APM Terminals, Odense Shipyard, Maersk Air, Maersk Tankers and other companies in shipping, retail, oil extraction and other sectors.
