As reported March 8, CKYH member 'K' Line and compatriot line MOL forged an agreement that saw them merging two similar Japan/U.S. West Coast loops, with MOL also jointly operating an existing 'K' Line service linking China and Japan with ports in the Pacific Northwest.
The realigned Japan/U.S. West service, dubbed CALCO-A by 'K' Line (and three other names by the other CKYH carriers) and JAS by the New World carriers, will be operated with five vessels averaging 4,482 TEUs, about 15 percent more capacity than first reported.
Meanwhile, the China/Japan/Pacific Northwest service, called PNW by 'K' Line and PN1 by MOL, will be operated with six vessels averaging 5,600 TEUs, nearly 8 percent more capacity than first reported and a 25 percent increase on the existing service.
Despite larger vessels being used in the revised services, capacity has been withdrawn from the trade by virtue of the merged CALCO-A/JAS service.
The first sailings on the newly realigned services are to occur April 7 and April 8, respectively. Also of note, Evergreen and CMA CGM will take slots on the CALCO-A/JAS service, with Evergreen calling it JAS and CMA CGM calling it Fuji Japan. ' Eric Johnson
