These new mobile cranes reduce fuel consumption and cut emissions by converting the downward motion of a raised container back into electricity that is stored and reused.
Financial details of the deal, or a per-unit cost of the cranes, were not announced.
Manufactured by the Tokyo-based TCM Corp. and Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., the cranes are destined for two 'K' Line terminals in Japan, one for the Ohi Terminal in Tokyo and two for the Honmoku Terminal in Yokohama. According to 'K' Line, the new one-over-five hybrid cranes will be the first of their kind in Japan.
The hybrid design of the cranes will, according to the manufacturers, reduce oil consumption by 40 percent to 50 percent over current models, reduce emissions by 40 percent to 50 percent, and reduce engine noise.
If the new cranes perform as expected, Yokohama, Japan-based Daito plans to increase the number of the hybrid cranes at Ohi and Honmoku to three each.
