Port of Singapore sees cargo throughput fall in 2015

Although the port handled less containerized and conventional cargo in terms of tonnage for the first 11 months of 2015 compared to last year, it handled more oil and non-oil bulk cargo year-over-year.    The Port of Singapore handled 2.4 million TEUs in November and 28.4 million TEUs during the first 11 months of 2015, year-over-year declines of 8.2 percent and 15.9 percent, respectively, according to recent figures released by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.
   Although November 2015 figures are preliminary estimates, results from all prior months have been finalized.
   Cargo throughput for all types of cargo combined in terms of tonnage reached 529.5 million tons for the first 11 months of the year, a 0.2 percent decline from the corresponding period in 2014.
   In terms of general cargo, the port handled 304 million tons of containerized cargo and 28 million tons of conventional cargo during the first 11 months of 2015 , year-over-year decreases of 5.9 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively.
   For bulk cargo, the port handled 180.8 million tons of oil and 16.7 million tons of non-oil bulk for the first 11 months of 2015, a year-over-year increase of 8.9 percent and 21.7 percent, respectively. 
   The port’s terminals are managed by two commercial port operators: PSA Corporation Ltd., which manages the major share of container handling in Singapore with over 50 berths from its container terminals combined; and Jurong Port Pte Ltd., which is Singapore’s main bulk and conventional cargo operator.
   Overall, a total of 157 shipping services call the port of Singapore, of which 129 of these services call other regions outside of Asia, according to ocean carrier schedule and capacity database BlueWater Reporting’s Port Dashboard tool. Intra-regional services outside of BlueWater Reporting’s scope – i.e. those that only call ports in Southeast Asia – are not included in this data.
