Teamsters want Maersk to “stop the abuse” of port truck drivers
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters will send a delegation to Denmark to demand A.P. Moller-Maersk Sealand treat port truck drivers better.During its Oct. 2-5 meeting in Copenhagen, the Teamster delegation will meet with the Danish trade union federation SID, members of the Danish parliament, and Maersk officials.
The delegation to Denmark follows Labor Day weekend protests by American trade union representatives at the Danish embassy in Washington, and Danish consulates in 20 cities. The protesters criticized Maersk for “harassing, intimidating, and terminating non-union port truck drivers who demand fair treatment and improved working conditions.”
Jim Hoffa, general president of the Teamsters said in a statement Wednesday: “It’s time to set the record straight. It’s time to stop the abuse.”
The Teamsters delegation plans to meet with Maersk officials in Copenhagen on the afternoon of Oct. 5. Maersk could not comment today on the allegations made against it in the United States.
Jette Clausen, spokeswoman for Maersk in Copenhagen, said company officials will meet the Teamsters delegation next Tuesday. “We will listen to them,” she said.
