The world’s largest container shipping company, Denmark’s Maersk Line, has put together a brochure detailing its efforts to minimize its impact on the environment.
The document shows that one of its giant PS-type Emma Maersk vessels emits 7.48 grams per ton-kilometers of carbon dioxide (CO2), comparing favorably to 8.36 g/tkm for its smaller S-types; 18 g/tkm for electric trains; 17 g/tkm for diesel powered trains; 50 g/tkm for a heavy truck; and 552 g/tkm for a Boeing 747-400.
“Moving goods by sea is the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transportation,” said Eivind Kolding, Maersk Line’s chief executive officer. “While we acknowledge that our energy consumption as a container shipping line is significant, we aim to make containerized transportation even more environmentally friendly and cost efficient by continuing to work with and engage all of our stakeholders.”
Maersk Line and Maersk Logistics have recently launched two services, Maersk Carbon Footprint Calculator, which estimates the carbon footprint of a customer's international supply chain; and SupplyChain CarbonCheck, a consulting service aimed at identifying ways to reduce those emissions.
“We are committed to the continuous improvement of our environmental performance while increasing the transparency and understanding of our environmental impact; whether it is onboard a ship or on land,” Kolding said.
