U.S. Coast Guard officials told wsitv.com the Hanjin San Diego lost power entering the mouth of the Cape Fear River and was in danger of running aground, but crew members dropped anchor to prevent the vessel from grounding. The vessel was en route from Port Newark to the Port of Wilmington at the time of the incident.
According to ocean carrier schedule and capacity database BlueWater Reporting, the 4,545-TEU German-flagged Hanjin San Diego serves on CKYHE Alliance’s AWE1 loop between Asia and the United States East Coast. The service is operated with nine Hanjin ships with an average capacity of 4,283 TEUs and has a full port rotation of Ningbo, Shanghai, Busan, New York/New Jersey, Wilmington, Savannah, Busan and Ningbo.
The CKYHE Alliance comprises ocean liners COSCO, “K” Line, Hanjin, Yang Ming and Evergreen Line, cooperating heavily in the major east-west trades.
The Coast Guard has dispatched two tugboats to the scene to move the ship further offshore in order to diagnose and address the issue (or issues) that may have caused the vessel to lose power.
