Last container lifted from “MSC Napoli”
Work will now start on re-floating the stricken containership “MSC Napoli” after salvor Smit on Thursday afternoon lifted the last container from the ship, which was purposefully grounded off England’s Devon coast in January.The 1991-built ship, operated by Mediterranean Shipping Co. on charter from London-based Zodiac Maritime between North Europe and South Africa via the Canary Islands, was carrying 2,394 containers when it was caught in a severe storm on Jan. 18 and started to crack up. The decision to beach the ship in Lyme Bay was made to avoid it sinking in deep water.
