U.K. government approves Hutchison’s Felixstowe South terminal project

U.K. government approves Hutchison’s Felixstowe South terminal project    British Transport Minister Derek Twigg today approved Hutchison Ports’ proposals for a new container terminal at Felixstowe South.
The project is designed to convert the area previously used by P&O North Sea Ferries, into a new deep-sea container terminal with an annual capacity of 1.5 million TEUs.
   “The proposed reconfiguration of the port will contribute significantly to meeting the national need for additional container handling capacity in a sustainable manner,” Twigg said. “I am satisfied that the proposals’ impacts on infrastructure and on the environment are acceptable and are adequately addressed by the proposed package of mitigation and other measures agreed by the promoters.”
   Since July 2005 the British government has given the green light to Hutchison Ports planned 1.7 million-TEU-capacity terminal at Bathside Bay in Harwich and P&O Ports’ 3.5 million-TEUs-a-year London Gateway Port.
