The 'Osaka Express' was built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea and is part of series of nine 8,750-TEU ships the German carrier will receive by the end of 2008.
The 103,000-deadweight-ton vessel has a length of 335 meters (1,099 feet) and a width of 43 meters (141 feet). The ship has 730 reefer plugs for refrigerated containers and its engine gives it a speed of 25 knots.
'To be able always to provide adequate ship capacity for our customers in Asia, we have invested massively in recent years and will continue to do so in future,' said Michael Behrendt, Hapag-Lloyd's chairman.
