Record steel imports at Los Angeles port The Port of Los Angeles can tuck another couple of titles under its belt.
   The nation's busiest container port for the seventh year running, Los Angeles now holds the national number-two slot and West Coast number-one slot for busiest steel port. The port received 4.1 million metric revenue tons (MRTs) in breakbulk steel and 800,000 MRTs in containerized steel for 2006.
   Nationally, only the Port of Houston moved more total MRTs of steel in 2006. The remaining top five steel ports in the nation for 2006 are, in order, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Detroit.
   The Port of Los Angeles handles slab steel for the California Steel Industry in Fontana, the only steel mini-mill in California that provides steel products such as steel coils and pipe throughout the western United States.
