PORT OF NEW YORK-NEW JERSEY POSTS 2001 GAINS    The Port of New York and New Jersey said its cargo volumes increased 5.6 percent in 2001, with each sector — containerized cargo, bulk, breakbulk, and rail activity — reporting growth.
   Loaded and unloaded container volumes totaled 3.32 million TEUs in 2001, up 8.7 percent. Loaded TEUs rose 4.2 percent to 2.33 million TEUs.
   Total tonnage climbed 13.5 percent to 73.55 million metric tons.
   ExpressRail, the port’s on-dock rail terminal at the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal, handled more than 200,000 containers in 2001, a record for the facility. Operations at the intermodal terminal increased 12.8 percent overall.
   Total general cargo in the port improved 5.6 percent to 19.81 million metric tons. Exports rose 14.1 percent to 5.94 million metric tons, while improves rose 2.4 percent to 13.87 million metric tons.
   Total bulk cargo jumped 16.7 percent to 53.74 million metric tons. Bulk exports leaped 79 percent to 2.33 million metric tons, while imports increased 14.9 percent to 53.74 million metric tons.
