Savi Networks LLC, which provides data networks based on active radio frequency identification (RFID) equipment, has announced the operational launch of SaviTrak, an information network using RFID tags on containers of consumer goods shipped by Mitsui & Co., an ocean carrier, from a factory in Guangdong, China, to a distribution center in southern California. Mitsui & Co. Ltd. of Japan is a large diversified trading and services company. Mitsui USA, the largest overseas subsidiary of Mitsui & Co., is a facilitator of shipping and logistics services for import, export, and offshore trade.
'This initial trade lane project demonstrates how managed services that leverage information from passive and active RFID technologies helps international suppliers meet the business challenges of retail RFID mandates,' said Lani Fritts, chief operating officer of Savi Networks, a wholly owned subsidiary of Savi Technology.
Masahiko Tsumoto, senior vice president and general manager of Mitsui USA's transportation logistics division, called the SaviTrak network 'a new generation of software driven by real-time, RFID-generated data.'
One aspect of the project is 'source tagging' of cases with passive RFID labels at a manufacturer's facility, and then tagging the containers those cases are stuffed into with active RFID tags. 'This is called 'nested visibility,' and enables the customer to automatically build the container manifest, and then automatically track the container and its contents along its end-to-end journey throughout the shared network,' Savi Networks said in a statement.
Savi Networks LLC and Savi Technology are based in Sunnyvale, Calif.
