The Port of Charleston's March container volume was 120,265 TEUs, 5.7 percent ahead of March 2010.
For the first nine months of its current fiscal year container volume was 1.03 million TEUs, 11.6 percent more than the prior fiscal year.
At Charleston and the Port of Georgetown, breakbulk cargo, including automobiles, project cargo and heavy lift shipments, totaled 754,000 tons in the first nine months of the fiscal year, 48 percent ahead of the 511,000 tons in the first three quarters of the prior year.
'While the rate of growth is slowing from last year's initial volume recovery, we are still moving in the right direction,' said Jim Newsome, president and chief executive officer of the South Carolina State Ports Authority. 'New distribution and manufacturing investments in the state and across the region, as well as export strength, will be felt in the coming months.'
