APMT ceases operations in Tacoma

Port operator APM Terminals ended its operations at the Port of Tacoma on Sept. 30, and transferred its lease to a new joint venture between terminal operator SSA Marine and ocean carrier Matson Lines, dubbed SSAT, on Oct. 2.    Port terminal operator APM Terminals (APMT), a subsidiary of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, has ended its operations at the Port of Tacoma as of Sept. 30, and transferred its lease to SSA Marine, which formed a new joint venture with Matson Lines, dubbed SSAT, on Oct. 2, APMT said in a statement.
   Although APMT Tacoma’s lease was set to expire Dec. 31, the contractual language permitted the lease transfer.
   “APM Terminals Tacoma was used primarily by the Matson Alaska Service, with twice-weekly sailings between Tacoma, Anchorage and Kodiak, Alaska, and a weekly service between Tacoma and Dutch Harbor, Alaska, handling a combined 190,000 TEUs in 2016,” APMT said.
   APMT’s U.S. portfolio includes operations at:
     • APM Terminals Pier 400 Los Angeles;
     • APM Terminals Port Elizabeth;
     • APM Terminals Mobile;
     • And a 49 percent share in the South Florida Container Terminal at Port Miami.
