Switch and bait in Los Angeles port After pulling contracts with two previous suppliers for environmental hazards, the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners has awarded a five-year contract to San Pedro Bait Co. Inc. to supply live bait in the Port of Los Angeles.
   The new bait barge operator will be located in the Port's Outer Harbor, near Cabrillo Marina, and will supply live bait to local sport and recreational fishers.
   After pulling the contracts of a long-term live bait supplier in November, the port issued a bid request in late January for a replacement. In February, the port pulled the contract of a second long-term live bait supplier.
   The port selected the bid from San Pedro Bait Co., stating that the bait firm demonstrated 'the greatest commitment to environmental stewardship.'
   In addition to overseeing the busiest container port in the nation, the Port of Los Angeles administration is also responsible for numerous public facilities including landings, marinas, and docks.
   'We recognize the importance of having live bait available in the Port of Los Angeles,' said Geraldine Knatz, port executive director. 'We are confident that the San Pedro Bait Co. will provide excellent service to the local fishing community while running an environmentally-friendly operation.'
