CSX offering customers æcarbon calculatorÆ Jacksonville-based CSX Transportation today kicked off a program that lets shippers calculate the carbon dioxide emission savings for specific rail shipments in comparison to using other transportation options.
   The environmentally oriented Carbon Calculator uses the CSX Web site to have shippers enter the weight and distance for a shipment, then estimates the CO2 savings from shipping by rail.
   'Rail is the most environmentally friendly and energy efficient land transportation option,' said Clarence Gooden, CSX executive vice president and chief commercial officer. 'This tool enables our customers and others to better understand the difference they can make — on a shipment by shipment basis — by choosing rail.'
   CSXT estimates its overall rail operations provide an annual reduction in CO2 emissions equal to taking one million passenger vehicles off the road.
