CHINA AIRLINES CHAIRMAN RESIGNS

   Chiang Hung-i, chairman of Taiwan-based China Airlines, has resigned following Sunday’s fatal crash of a CAL MD-11 in Hong Kong, according to Taiwanese news sources.
   The CAL crash killed two people and injured 211 other passengers aboard the MD-11, which flipped and caught fire while attempting to land in heavy winds.
   Taiwanese officials are calling for more resignations at CAL and in the
state transportation department, following a string of other
transportation-related accidents this week.
   An MD-90 aircraft owned by Uni Air, a unit of the Evergreen Group,
crashed in Taiwan on Tuesday injuring 28 of its 90 passengers. The same day, an Evergreen container ship collided with a cruise ship off the coast of southern England.
