Hapag-Lloyd president Mack retiring in July

Hapag-Lloyd president Mack retiring in July R'diger “Rudy” Mack, president of Hapag-Lloyd (America) Inc., has announced he will retire this summer.
   Mack has worked for the German carrier since 1972. He will be replaced on July 3 by Klaus Altstadt, Hapag-Lloyd's Singapore-based president for the Asia region.
   Mack most recently helped oversee integration in North America of Hapag-Lloyd and CP Ships. That 2005 merger made Hapag-Lloyd the world's fifth-largest container carrier. The information service AXS Marine said Hapag-Lloyd has a fleet of 140 owned and chartered ships with a capacity of 479,492 TEU, and another nine ships on order.
   Mack, who works out of the company’s North America headquarters in Piscataway, N.J., is a well known personality in the shipping industry and just this January was named “Person of the Year” by the New York-New Jersey Foreign Freight Forwarders & Brokers Association.
   He has held numerous executive positions with Hapag Lloyd, including president for Asia; managing director of Hapag-Lloyd (Japan), based in Tokyo; and managing director of Hapag-Lloyd (France), based in Paris. He also had postings in both New York, San Francisco, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Panama earlier in his career.
   Indeed, he is said to be planning as first order of business in his retirement a round-the-world trip with his wife to visit locations where he had previously worked.
