The Singapore-based line carried 423,000 TEUs, 14 percent higher than the volume carried in the corresponding period in 2008 — which was the month immediately following the apex of the global financial crisis. The volume did not translate well to revenue, however, with rates down 29 percent, to an average of $1,127 per TEU, due mostly to low base rates and bunker surcharge collection.
The line said its volume was boosted by the introduction of a new peak season transpacific service as well as increased intra-Asia activity.
