Savannah gets Ga. grant for harbor dredging    The Port of Savannah has secured $68 million in bond funding from the state of Georgia to deepen its harbor to allow larger ships to call on the port once the Panama Canal is widened in 2014.
   The port is planning to deepen its harbor on the Savannah River from 42 feet to 48 feet. Federal funds will be used to match the state money, with the total project cost estimated at $550 million. The state had previously allocated $40 million for environmental study of the project.
   The dredging project is considered key to allowing Savannah to grow its container volume from its current 2.4 million TEUs to more than 5 million TEUs by the time the canal expansion is completed.
