Menzies workers vote to strike

   Close to 90 percent of the union workers who voted have decided to strike at Menzies World Cargo.
   The Heathrow-based workers are upset their pay has been frozen for the last two years.
   “Our door is always open, but time is running out,” Oliver Richardson of Unite, Britain’s largest trade union, said in a statement. “Unless we get some movement in the next few days we will have no choice but to announce a strike date. It is completely unreasonable for a successful company which is making significant profits to force its workers to take a two year pay freeze.”
   With 62 of Unite’s workers voting, 89 percent have decided a strike is the way to go. More than 75 percent of cargo workers turned in ballots, with a strike vote of 87 percent. Voting turnout among trucking workers finished at 62 percent, and 94 percent of those voting chose to strike.
   Talks to resolve the worker’s grievances broke down in April. At the time, Unite had said it had “begun preparations” for a strike. – Jon Ross
