House Republicans want HOS study

   Four Capitol Hill Republicans are preparing to send a letter to Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx next week asking for a report on the potential impact of the hours of service’s 34-hour restart provision that was supposed to be filed months ago, according to Politico.  
   Reps. Todd Rokita, Trey Randel, Tom Rice and Richard Hanna demand a response from the secretary by Sept. 12.
   Three months before the new hours of service rule became law on July 1, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration had pledged to send in a scientific study of the benefits of the rule change.
   “We request that the FMCSA establish and provide to us the date on which the efficacy study required by MAP-21 and full report will be completed and submitted to Congress,” they wrote in the letter, Politico said.
   The lawmakers are concerned the rule’s rest periods, which are not flexible enough, are pigeonholing drivers. They also bring up the potential for a $376 million annual cost hit that will be taken by the industry due to this rule change.
